Lethologica

My CD will be for a contemporary classical, or electronic ambient artist, and the design will be based around the meaning of the name "Lethologica" -a condition of not being able to remember the words or phrases you need in conversation. This condition to me signifies that often we cannot control our brains or our selves as much as we want to. The unconscious has a huge influence as does our environment. Information overload could also perhaps contribute to this condition. According to Wikipedia, the condition was first talked about by Carl Jung in Wandlungen und Symbole der Libido (The Psychology of the Unconscious). Originally my design was going to be based around Brain Scans and Neurons firing and typography spilling out, but then I realised the brief required non copyright images. The new design is based on some college artwork from the debris of daily life which is quite surrealist in nature to fit in with the Album title, "Wandlungen und Symbole der Libido"

LETHOLOGICA. A compilation of contemporary Australian Hip Hop

...lethologica: a psychological disorder that inhibits an individual's ability to articulate his or her thoughts by temporarily forgetting key words, phrases or names in conversation...

A key aspect of Australian Hip Hop is poetic articulation of current ideologies (clever words that express our current society). I therefore like the irony that the title Lethologica brings.

The aesthetic for the cover design has not really been inspired by any existing album covers that I've seen. Rather, I have drawn inspiration from the overall culture o
f Hip Hop in Australia - which strips back the fake and the sexy, and focusses solely on the music and the message.

The cover therefore will use images of music equipment that Hip Hop artists use (eg. mixing desks, turntables, amps, mics etc) collaged together to create a robot character that will recur throughout the booklet artwork. Other elements will include graphics inspired by street art and urban culture.

featured artists will include:
muph and plutonic
the herd
urthboy
the resin dogs
bliss n esso
hilltop hoods
butterfingers
macromantics
maya jupiter
morganics
true live
TZU
1200 techniques

Luke ,C.D cover discription

Leatherette,
ROCK AND ROLL , Is the genre that my c.d will be focused on .It will be featuring some of the earlier renown bands of the rock and roll / almost heavy metal . A almost pub ,road rock and roll type . (A.D.C.D,Rose tattoo ,Black sabbath, Guns n roses,)An era untoward itself .

I will take to with , BLACK , some illustrations will be involved , skulls , ladies, flames , guitars .The packaging has not yet been decided . It needs to be easy to use , lyrical. and catchy .i like the traditional fold outs as well as booklet type additions , but am looking for something different , eg. fold open heavy card opening pages , with a drop down bi -folding ,adjoining pages , covered with illustration and lyrics ,(Then again maybe time consuming to put away ,Maybe which has been done before , a poster on the back of the fold out in which the avid music supporter might like to place on his wall. All ideas for process to take over .

So I think catching the genre with symbols that go alongside with the current and forever lasting rock and roll lifestyle , such as sculls , the feminine image something that will really rock out to the eye and stand alone , away from other culture which it does within itself.
Referring to the black and white , got any blacker cop out can be an easy out , yet again it can create quite the catchy outlook if used properly ,which I will be trying hard to accomplish , but again am not forcing out the use of colour. If i can create real mystical type of feel with a manipulated blue or a purple , Evan some flame colouring to accentuate the illustrations within the covering and overall process .

Leatherette

The compilation CD that I'm designing the cover for - Leatherette - will be a blend of folk, indie- alternative and indie pop female artists. It will balance haunting and beautiful songs from Sarah Blasko, Regina Spektor, Laura Marling, Cat Power and Florence and the Machine with lighter more quirky songs from artists such as Kate Nash and Kimya Dawson.

The aesthetics of the CD will need to reflect this feel and so will be feminine, handmade/ craftsy and whimsical. Colours will be feminine but earthy (not girly) and the packaging itself will be natural, environmentally conscious and satisfying to own and hold.

MIXED TAPE - Roxy

THE SONGS

For my CD design, I felt that I had to decide what sounds could be on the compilation first to help me get an idea of the feel that it would have.

I was tossing up as to whether to do a Techno / Punk Rock album with such artists as Breathe Carolina, MGMT and Shiny Toy Guns or an Alternative / Indie soft album. I eventually decided to go with the Alternative / Indie album, and my track list is as follows:

Coin Laundry - Lisa Mitchell

Rabbit Heart (Raise it Up) - Florence and the Machine

A White Demon Love Song - The Killers

Little Lion Man - Mumford & Sons

Ours - The Bravery

Breathe Me - Sia

Shooting the Moon - OK GO

Hey, Soul Sister - Train

Full Moon - The Black Ghosts

Let's Get Lost - Beck and Bat for Lashes

Hide and Seek - Imogen Heap

Hearts a Mess - Gotye

Love Song - Amiel

Once in a Lifetime - Talking Heads

My target market will be for women.

THE ARTWORK

With my final thoughts as to the song list for the album, I felt that the album needed personal touches with soft and comforting colours. I want to have a smilliar effect that the opening credits to the movie Juno have.

Some insperation...

Just for the record - I dont actually want my album to look anything like the above unicorn
one, I just thought it looked hilarious ;)

So I intend to colage my CD cover with different papers, inks, photographs, computer rendered images and my own hard drawings. I have set myself the challenge of drawing most of the artwork as it is not my greatest strength!
